Owens Dulce et Decorum and Whitmans Dirge for Two Veterans both recognise extremely optical and emotional statements about the watch everywhere of dying in struggle. Whitmans song states that his veterans died an priseable ending, and his speaker feels idealistic of their last-ditch sacrifice and wishes he could convey his feelings to them. Owens poem takes an reversal point of view about dying in struggle; his speaker conveys disgust about the way veterans died horrifically and that on that point is no honour in their deaths. The opposing views on death and honour can be compared with each authors use of pathos, visual imagery, historical context, and the subjects in these poems. The historical context of these state of wars explains some of the unlike vie ws of honour and war. Whitmans war was the American civil war; artillery pieces were often visible to the opposing forces and had a diddle range.
